How do I maintain and clean my wood butcher block to keep it in good condition?

Several techniques can be used to maximize the life of your wood butcher block. Whether it's using proper cleaning products or paying attention to certain details, you'll be able to maximize the life of your butcher block.

Clean your butcher block after each use

It's important to clean your wood butcher block thoroughly after each use. Use a clean, damp cloth to remove food residues. Strong chemicals should not be used on your butcher block. We recommend using a mixture of mild soaps and lukewarm water to tackle stubborn stains. Be sure to dry your wood butcher block thoroughly.

Avoid submerging your butcher block in water when cleaning.

It's important not to completely submerge your butcher block in water when cleaning, as this could impact the wood's surface. Immersing your butcher block completely in water could cause the wood to swell and warp. We therefore strongly advise against immersing your wood butcher block in water when cleaning it.

Maintain your butcher block regularly with oils or waxes

There are three reasons for using butcher block oil to maximize the life of your wood butcher block using a maintenance oil prevents the wood from dehydrating by saturating the fiber, thereby protecting it from water and other liquids. In addition, maintenance oils protect your butcher block from stains and odors by creating a protective barrier. Finally, tapplying a butcher's block oil enables the product to retain its lustrous appearance while increasing its resistance level.

Avoid serrated edges as much as possible

It's best to avoid serrated knives, as they can leave marks on your wood butcher block if not used properly. Smooth-bladed knives are preferable. To maximize the life of your butcher block, it is also advisable to rotate the block. This prevents uneven wear on the cutting surface.
